Hazel Jett Life Story

Hazel Elois Jett was born on February 25, 1939, in Mendenhall, Mississippi and spent the majority of her life rooted on the South Side of Chicago. A woman of deep faith, Hazel was a devoted member of Progressive Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend T.E. Brown and Reverend Retha Brown, now known as Progressive Baptist Chicago under Pastor Charlie Dates. She faithfully served on the Usher Board for more than 60 years and remained steadfast in worship and service throughout her life.

Hazel was a hardworking and dedicated woman who spent many years employed with the Social Security Administration. She was highly respected in her role as one of the most admired female lieutenants to serve at 600 W. Madison.

Due to illness in late 2025, Hazel relocated to Gary, Indiana. On November 2, 2025, she became a member of Redeemed Full Gospel Sanctuary International, Inc., under the leadership of Apostle Dr. Leonda Garmon. She continued to walk faithfully in her spiritual journey, finding comfort, strength, and fellowship within her church family.

Hazel was lovingly cared for by her devoted granddaughter, Cherita Monique “Mo” Jett, and great-granddaughter, Halie Dunn. Their attentive, selfless, and compassionate care ensured that Hazel’s comfort, dignity, and daily needs were met with extraordinary love until her peaceful transition on May 6, 2026, at 8:20 a.m.

Hazel was preceded in death by her grandmother, Beatrice Haynes; grandfather, Buford Haynes Sr.; aunt, Alice Price; uncles, Buford Haynes Jr. and Luther Haynes Sr.; mother, Essie Mae Betts; father, Woodall Walker; and sister, Joyce Evelyn Hubbard.

Hazel leaves to cherish her memory her beloved daughter, Carla Dennise Jett; niece, Deatrix “Dee” Long; grandchildren, Cherita Monique “Mo” Jett (Stephen Strong), Chanté Marie Cunningham, and Stefon Tyreece Jett; great-nephews and niece, Henry Long Jr., Brianna Long, and Brandon Long; great-grandchildren, Halie Dunn, D’Mya Cunningham, Isaiah Cunningham, and Zachariah Cunningham; close family friends, Bonnie Spanks and Annie Green; along with a host of other relatives and dear friends.
