Celebrating the Life of Betty Marie Peacock
Betty Marie Peacock (Mama Betty) was born October 21, 1937 in Ville Platte, LA to the union of
Alice and Olizean Stevens. She was the youngest child of three in this union. Betty was raised on a farm and gleaned many life lessons from this experience. Betty attended grammar school and high school, having obtained her G.E.D later in life from Daley College.
Betty married her first husband Linton Malbrew, and to this union her oldest daughter, Loretta Marie was born. She then found it necessary to relocate to Chicago in 1959 where she met and married Bennie Powell, and to this union Bridget Fay, Derrick Louis and Errick Lee were born. With a full house, Betty was a stay-at-home mom and wife who cared for her children. She did purse work opportunities during this time, working as an LPN at Bethany Hospital, and at Williams Electronics, where she worked for over 40 years, retiring in 2001. She remarried in 1985 to Herbert Peacock. During retirement, she stayed active with various activities, such as church, travel and extensive reading.
Betty accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age and strove to live a life pleasing to the Lord. She was a member of Greater Mt. Pleasant MBC for a number of years, under the leadership of Pastor J.P. White, where she served as a Sunday School Teacher for young children, and as a member of the Pastor’s Aid Board.
Betty moved her membership from Greater Mt. Pleasant to Mount Gerizim Baptist Church, under the leadership of Pastor W.V. Pickett. At Mount Gerizim, she served on the Worship Team and the Mother’s Board. She then was led to become a member of Harvest Christian Center under the leadership of Bishop Ray Llarena, where she continued her growth as a Christian, and came into her own as a Mother of Zion. Along the way, she amassed many spiritual children, and was a source of comfort, encouragement and wisdom to those whose lives she touched.
Mother Betty made her transition when her Savior called her home Thursday, September 17th, 2020 at 6:05 a.m. She left an indelible mark on those who knew her, and while she will be missed, her life will be celebrated as a child of God who loved Jesus and relied on the Holy Spirit as her guide.
She is preceded in death by her mother and father, her youngest sister, Dolores Poulard, her youngest son Errick Lee, and her aunts and uncles. She leaves to cherish her memory her sister, Laura Belle of Portland, OR, her brother, Hubert Stevens of Grand Prairie, TX., and her children, Loretta (Roy) Godinez, Bridget Powell and Derrick Powell; she had a special bond with her grandchildren - Gabriel and Nathan Godinez, Errick II, Elondia and Erin (Curtis) Powell, Sedrick and Katherine Powell, and great grandchildren Nyla Marie Pearson, Jamel Shamaine Thomas, Jr., Josiah McPeak, and Princeton Melvin Lee Powell.
Mother Betty, as she was affectionately called, had many interests, including support of various missionary ministries, cooking (she made a great gumbo and hot water cornbread). She was known to be freehearted, wanting to help whenever she could. She was devoted to praying without ceasing. She loved to talk about God, and how good He is, and she held a special love for Jewish people. She absolutely loved her children, grandchildren and family – she always talked about how important family was.
She will be missed…may her memory be for a blessing.
