Obituary

Our Angel

Mistique Marie Sampson a beautiful, smiling baby girl was born in Chicago, Illinois on June 20, 1981 to Yolanda and Larry Sampson. And, if you ask anyone who knows her, she smiled every day of her life.

Mistique and her younger sister Monique grew as two peas in a pod, as close as siblings could be, never straying too far from one another, always together. As children they attended New Haven Missionary Baptist Church. A few years later, Mistique was baptized at Emmanuel Baptist Church. Here she truly found her calling to service; to help her fellow man. Mistique was a faithful member of the choir, where one of favorite hymns was "I Will Trust in the Lord". That she did! She also served as a Candy Striper, never happier than when she was dressed in her uniform & smiling, ready to go volunteer.

Mistique was a proud graduate of John Marshall Harlan High School on Chicago's south side. Upon completion of high school, she knew that the key to a good life was through hard work & dedication. No one was one more qualified than our Misty! From working for years at the Department of Corrections to being the really early bird at Dunkin' Donuts to entering the fast paced world of communications at US Cellular, Mistique was the epitome of JOB WELL DONE! She wanted to work and you wanted her to work for and with you.

Kind, caring, considerate, jolly, funny, generous, warm, witty…all of those words describe Mistique, none of those words start with M or S. Neither did her life. Her existence didn't start or end when she got sick. It changed. From caretaker to cared for, not careless. From hopeful to hoping, not hopeless. What never changed was how much she loved and was loved and is loved!

In 2009, Mistique was diagnosed with MS. For the past thirteen years she bravely battled the demons of this disease. On Friday, December 16, 2022, God called our warrior home. Welcoming her into heaven, were her mother Yolanda Kennon and grandmother, Hattie Kennon, who preceded her in death.

Mistique leaves to cherish her memory: her wonderful and devoted sister, Monique Sampson; a namesake niece, Heiress Mistique Williams; older siblings: Gloria Lewis, Tonya Sampson, Lynette Gipson, Maurice Sampson; sisters and brothers in love: April Cunningham, Ashle Neely-Thompson, Charles Kelley, Oscar Townsend, Prince Elston; brother/cousins: The Jordans and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and a tremendous circle of friends.

Dr Seuss said, "Don't cry because it's over. Smile because it happened!" Tears will flow, but the joy that comes from every memory of Mistique Marie Sampson should make us all smile a little wider, laugh a lot more and be proud that she happened to be our friend!
